A pochi passi dal Colosseo si erge, massiccio e possente, l'Arco di Costantino di marmo bianco e numerose decorazioni e sculture. E' caratterizzato da tre fornici, un passaggio centrale più grande e due laterali più piccoli. È uno dei massimi esempi di arte scultorea, un libro aperto dell'arte romana grazie alle pregevoli rifiniture, sculture e scritte, facendone un vero e proprio gioiello artistico tutto da ammirare. L'arco di Costantino venne realizzato nel 312 dal senato per commemorare la vittoria di Costantino I contro Massenzio nella battaglia di Ponte Milvio avvenuta il 28 ottobre dello stesso anno. Nel 315 venne inaugurato in concomitanza con la festa “Decennalia” in onore dei dieci anni di regno. Il luogo non fu, ovviamente, casuale, poiché l'Arco venne costruito tra il Palatino e il Celio, dove un tempo si trovava antico percorso dei trionfi. L'Arco di Costantino è uno dei tre archi trionfali sopravvissuti a Roma, in via dei Fori imperiali: gli altri due sono l'Arco di Tito (81-90 circa) e l'Arco di Settimio Severo (202-203). Nel corso degli anni alcune ipotesi, suffragate da alcuni scavi effettuati nelle fondamenta dell'Arco di Costantino, propendono verso un'origine Adrianea (durante il regno di Adriano). Successivamente venne radicalmente rimaneggiato in epoca costantiniana. L'aspetto cambiò notevolmente a causa dello spostamento in fuori delle colonne; l'intero attico venne ricostruito in buona parte e fu inserito il Grande fregio traianeo sulle pareti interne del passaggio centrale. In ultimo si possono ricondurre i Tondi Traianei all'originaria decorazione del monumento. Commenti e critiche sempre molto gradite. Grazie.
