Denominata nei documenti d'archivio “Torre ubi dicitur la Pagliarola, torre in marittima constructa vel in marittima Castri Abatis, Torre della Marina del Castello dello Abate, ed in ultimo Torre Perrotti”, fu edificata, su disposizione regia, nella prima metà del secolo XV, nei pressi dell'antico porticciolo medioevale de “lu Traviersu”, nell'Antica ed omonima località della Pagliarola, vasta area pianeggiante delimitata dal mare e dalle pendici del Monte Sant'Angelo, su cui fu costruito il Castello dell'Abate. Dopo la caduta dei Sanseverino, la Torre passò nelle mani di varie e potenti famiglie di feudatari (Caracciolo, Carafa, Freccia, Filomarino) per essere definitivamente requisita dalla Regia Corte, perché ritenuta indispensabile per il controllo dei traffici commerciali e per la difesa del litorale dagli attacchi dei Turchi.
