La chiesa di S.Giovanni a Porta Latina, così chiamata per la vicinanza alla porta Latina, fu fondata da Gelasio I nel V secolo, riedificata da Adriano I nel 772 e restaurata nel 1191, anno in cui, sotto Celestino III, furono traslate qui le reliquie dei Ss.Gordiano ed Epimaco. La chiesa sarebbe sorta a ricordo dell'evento miracoloso per cui S.Giovanni subì la prova dell'olio bollente uscendone illeso: il miracolo è ricordato dall'adiacente cappellina denominata S.Giovanni in Oleo. La facciata, scandita in alto da tre finestre centinate, è preceduta da un portico a cinque arcate, costituite da quattro colonne di marmo e granito ed ornate da tre capitelli ionici ed uno dorico. Sotto il portico, sulla destra, è conservata la cuspide original del tempietto di S.Giovanni in Oleo, sul quale invece fu collocato, nel 1967, un calco in gesso ad opera dell'architetto Paolo Marconi. Sulla sinistra svetta il campanile romanico del XII secolo, di forma quadrata a cinque ordini: il primo piano presenta una sola monofora tamponata, il secondo piano una bifora con archi poggianti su pilastro, mentre gli ultimi tre piani, trifore su colonnine e capitelli. La cella campanaria conserva una campana del 1723. Degli antichi affreschi medioevali che ricoprivano il portico e parte della facciata rimangono purtroppo solo alcune tracce.
