Il Palazzo di Inverno è l'edifico principale dell'Hermitage. È stata proprio questa infatti la residenza principale invernale degli imperatori russi dal 1762 al 1904. Sono ancora visitabili le stanze nelle quali soggiornavano i reali. L'edificio venne costruito dal magnifico architetto italiano Rastrelli con uno stile barocco a cui vennero aggiunti anche elementi in stile rococò. Vi furono diversi incendi che purtroppo rovinarono gli splendidi interni, fu per questo infatti che intervennero successivamente altri architetti come Auguste Montferrand, Carlo Rossi, Giacomo Quarenghi, Valadimir Stasov, Alexander Briullov e molti altri cercarono di renderlo nel corso degli anni ancora più bello ed elegante.
