Il cocco, o noce di cocco (Cocus nocifera), è un alimento ricco di proprietà benefiche per la salute. Gli abitanti delle isole del Pacifico lo considerano un vero e proprio toccasana per la salute e la palma da cocco viene soprannominata "Albero della Vita". Per noi il cocco rappresenta un alimento esotico, un cibo fresco tipico della stagione estiva. Quando apriamo una comune noce di cocco, ecco che possiamo gustare la sua polpa. Dalla noce di cocco ancora verde viene ricavata l'acqua di cocco, una bevanda particolarmente dissetante e ricca di sali minerali. Il cocco è considerato un alimento benefico in particolare per via del suo contenuto di sali minerali. Inoltre, è un importante fonte di potassio ma contiene anche altri minerali come magnesio, rame, fosforo, zinco e ferro. Contiene zuccheri naturali, fibre vegetali e amminoacidi. Si tratta anche di una fonte di alcune vitamina, con particolare riferimento alle vitamine del gruppo B, alla vitamina C, alla vitamina E e alla vitamina K. Il cocco secondo la medicina naturale ha la capacità di regolare gli zuccheri nel sangue, di abbassare il colesterolo e di aiutare l'organismo a mantenere la corretta idratazione, in particolare se oltre alla polpa di cocco si consuma anche l'acqua di cocco. Il consumo di cocco inoltre aiuta a migliorare la digestione, supporta il sistema immunitario, è utile nella difesa da virus e infezioni e contribuisce a regolare il metabolismo e a mantenere un peso del corpo corretto. Il consumo di cocco inoltre supporta lo sviluppo di ossa e denti forti e sani, aumentando la capacità del nostro corpo di assimilare il calcio e il magnesio.
