Sopra i cieli del Marrargiu di Bosa si può facilmente vedere veleggiare un grande avvoltoio, che risale dal mare verso la montagna e ti passa sulla testa imponente in un paesaggio fra i più incontaminati dell'intero Mediterraneo, è un'immagine di libertà e di una natura che ha resistito all'assalto speculativo dell'uomo il più terribile predatore mai apparso sulla terra - Il Grifone termine scientifico Gyps fulvus, è un grosso avvoltoio carnivoro appartenente all'ordine degli Accipitriformi e alla famiglia degli Accipitridi. Segni distintivi di questo grande avvoltoio sono: la colorazione marrone chiaro tendente al beige negli adulti e marrone scuro negli esemplari immaturi con la testa e il collo “nudi”, il becco forte e uncinato, le zampe robuste, dotate di unghioni lunghi, ma non adatti alla cattura di prede vive, le ali lunghe e larghe, con un'apertura sino a 280 cm, il peso arriva a 12 chilogrammi. Totalmente necrofago, l'alimentazione in Sardegna gli viene fornita per circa il 95% dalle carogne degli animali d'allevamento e per il restante 5% da animali selvatici di medie dimensioni. Il grifone è un uccello sociale. Esso vive in colonie su pareti rocciose dell'interno o, localmente, su falesie marine ricche di cavità e sporgenze. La maturità sessuale viene aggiunta intorno al quarto – quinto anno di vita. Le coppie sono monogame, rimangono cioé unite per tutta la vita. Tra Gennaio e Marzo, in seguito alla costruzione o riassetto del nido (di piccole dimensioni rispetto alla mole del grifone), viene deposto un unico uovo (bianco) che verrà covato con cura alternativamente da entrambi i partners per 52-54 giorni. La schiusa è in primavera (generalmente ad aprile), e, successivamente il giovane viene nutrito e allevato con molta dedizione: uno dei genitori sarà al suo fianco sino a quando le sue dimensioni non lo metteranno al riparo dall' eventuale attacco dei corvi imperiali, e in alcuni casi sino al giorno dell'involo che avverrà tra la metà di Luglio e la fine di Agosto, dopo una permanenza nel nido di circa 4 mesi. Grazie alla loro socialità per la ricerca del cibo i grifoni utilizzano una strategia di gruppo: alzatisi in volo utilizzando le correnti ascensionali o sfruttando direttamente i venti, cosa che gli consente un modesto dispendio energetico, i vari individui della colonia coprono ognuno una porzione di territorio restando però a contatto visivo gli uni con gli altri. Scoperta una carogna, l'esemplare più vicino ad essa inizia dei voli circolari per poi scendere sul terreno. Il ruolo ecologico del grifone è, sotto il profilo igienico sanitario, molto importante. Cibandosi esclusivamente di carogne, esso limita i rischi di infezioni o malattie trasmissibili anche all'uomo. Da studi veterinari effettuati in Francia, si è stabilito che il loro apparato digestivo, di soli 3 metri di lunghezza, è in grado di distruggere tutti i virus, batteri o parassiti presenti nelle carni di cui si nutre, grazie al repentino cambio di acidità tra il gozzo ,lo stomaco e la parte intestinale. Questo grande avvoltoio può quindi essere definito a pieno titolo uno spazzino della natura e uno dei simboli viventi della Sardegna agro-pastorale. Appunti tratti da l'Altra Bosa
