La cattedrale di Perugia, dedicata a S. Lorenzo, diacono al servizio di Papa Sisto II, martirizzato a Roma nel 258, secondo la tradizione, a fuoco lento su una graticola, è inserita in un complesso architettonico che, nel suo insieme, dal punto di vista urbanistico, si definisce “isola di S. Lorenzo”, o anche “castello di S. Lorenzo”. La Cattedrale, con la facciata meridionale, fa da sfondo alla “Piazza maggiore”, oggi piazza IV novembre, che raccoglie in uno stesso spazio, al tempo stesso funzionale e simbolico, i palazzi del potere civile ed ecclesiastico; la celebre fontana (“fontana maggiore”), dovuta al genio artistico di Nicola e Giovanni Pisano (1287), mentre ne sottolinea il legame, celebra, insieme all'universo culturale dell'età comunale, la storia civile e religiosa della città.
