La notte di Walpurga o Valpurga è la festività che viene celebrata nel lasso di tempo compreso tra il 30 Aprile e l'alba del primo Maggio.Tipica delle regioni centrali e settentrionali d'Europa, il Walpurgisnacht viene celebrata tramite canti, balli e falò, e a seconda delle differenti tradizioni assume diversi significati.Secondo la tradizione celtica questa notte si attendeva il nuovo giorno che segnava il trionfo della luce sulle tenebre, l'inizio del Bealtuinn (Il mese di Maggio in gaelico). Da queste celebrazioni sarebbe derivato successivamente il Calendimaggio medievale. La cristianizzazione dell'Europa portò, come in tutte le tradizioni pagane, all'alterazione di questa festività, descritta come la notte in cui gli spiriti inferi, streghe, stregoni e altri blasfemi si riunivano in sabba. Ironia vuole che una monaca inglese di nome Walpurga (Devonshire, Wessex, circa 710 ? Heidenheim, 25 febbraio 779), diventata badessa del monastero tedesco di Heidenheim presso Eichstatt, venne santificata nel giorno della sua sepoltura, ovvero il primo Maggio del 871, dando origine al nome della festività. Questa coincidenza dipinse questa santa come la protettrice da streghe e sortilegi, spingendo i credenti a pellegrinaggi per ottenere l'olio di santa Walpurga, ottenuto dall'acqua che si raccoglie in inverno sotto il sarcofago della badessa, ritenuto capace di difendere dalle stregonerie. La croce che si vede in silouette non è una vera croce, ma la punta a vite di una scultura in ferro.
