Quando la neve si ritira dai pascoli di montagna lascia il posto al risveglio della natura; tutto riprende vigore e i primi caprioli si affacciano timorosi nelle distese di crocus a brucare la prima erbetta fresca dopo il duro inverno. In questi giorni avviene il cambio del mantello invernale grigiastro con quello estivo fulvo: la muta. Durante questa fase assume un aspetto piuttosto dimesso; dell'elegante livrea invernale resta solo un vago ricordo e il mantello spelacchiato fa assumere al selvatico un aspetto piuttosto bruttino. Ma fra qualche giorno si riaffaccerà nelle radure nel suo splendido abito estivo fulvo. I periodi di muta variano, anche in modo consistente, in funzione del clima, dell'altitudine e della latitudine dei territori dove vive il capriolo. La muta del mantello viene effettuata di norma prima dagli individui giovani, come in questo caso. Nel maschietto si possono notare le corna ancora coperte dal muschio invernale.
