Santa Maria del Bosco, piccolo oratorio benedettino alle dipendenze dell'abbazia di Pedona, divenne una delle più importanti parrocchie di Cuneo dopo l'erezione della Diocesi di Mondovì nel 1388. Nel 1683 la chiesa era in grado di ospitare ben quattordici altari appartenenti non solo alle famiglie nobili della città, ma anche alle varie corporazioni artigiane (calzolai, tessitori, vignaioli, etc.) L'edificio subì vari interventi lungo il corso del XVII secolo, come la ricostruzione, in seguito al crollo della cupola nel 1656, su progetto di Giovenale Boetto, del 1657-62 . Scampata alla demolizione delle mura della città da parte dei Francesi, la chiesa divenne cattedrale con l'istituzione della diocesi nel 1817. Nel 1863-66, con la realizzazione della facciata neoclassica, l'edificio venne a raccordarsi con i portici e idealmente con la vicina piazza (oggi Piazza Galimberti). Numerose le opere che meritano particolare attenzione all'interno della chiesa: il fonte battesimale in pietra del 1490, attribuito alla bottega degli Zabreri, gli splendidi stalli del coro settecentesco e l'imponente altare della cappella del Rosario, con colonne tortili in marmo rosso, proveniente dalla chiesa di Sant'Agostino di Mondovì. Tra le opere di pittura, di particolare rilevanza la pala del coro con la Madonna col Bambino e i santi Michele, Giovanni Battista di Andrea Pozzo e le tele seicentesche della cappella di San Giuseppe attribuite al Caravoglia. Degno di nota è il crocifisso ligneo settecentesco attribuito al Plura e conservato nell'omonima cappella.
