Montmartre è stato per lungo tempo un villaggio separato da Parigi. Sull'origine del nome si fanno due ipotesi; potrebbe derivare da Mont Martis (il monte di Marte), poiché la collina fu la sede di un tempio dedicato a Marte, dio della guerra, sotto il periodo romano (sulla collina si trova anche un tempio dedicato a Mercurio); secondo un'altra ipotesi il nome deriva dalla notazione le mont du martyre (il monte del martirio), perché, secondo la leggenda, fu il posto in cui fu decapitato Saint Denis, primo vescovo di Parigi, attorno al 250 d.C.
