Le origini di questo monumento restano a tutt'oggi ancora controverse. Secondo Cesare D'Onofrio, il Pantheon sarebbe sorto sul luogo dove, Romolo "ascese" in cielo durante una cerimonia in Campo Marzio, interrotta da un improvviso, violentissimo nubifragio. Per secoli in quel luogo, nel giorno della scomparsa di Romolo, si sono svolti riti e processioni che ricordavano quell'evento sovrannaturale. Forse esisteva già un santuario, magari modesto, dedicato a quelle pratiche. E quando nell'anno 27 avanti Cristo Marco Vipsanio Agrippa eresse il Pantheon, non scelse a caso il teatro tradizionale dell'apoteosi del fondatore di Roma: Agrippa era il genero e l'architetto principe di Augusto, il quale voleva apparire come il nuovo Romolo, il nuovo fondatore della fortuna universale dell'Urbe. Il primo Pantheon subì incendi e altre calamità . Fu restaurato due volte finché Adriano, il grande imperatore-architetto, lo rifece quasi per intero. Si deve forse ad Adriano il pronao con sedici grandi colonne, mentre le dimensioni della vera e propria"rotonda" furono ampliate fino a sostenere la superba cupola in calcestruzzo una tecnica d'avanguardia. Concluso il rifacimento, Adriano ripristinò sul frontone l'iscrizione commemorativa di Agrippa: "Marco Agrippa, figlio di Lucio, Console per la terza volta, edificò”. Il Pantheon venne trasformato in chiesa sotto papa Bonifacio IV che, nel 609 d.C, lo dedicò alla Madonna e a tutti i Martiri. Proprio a causa di questa sua nuova utilizzazione l'imponente monumento è riuscito a conservare inalterate le sue linee essenziali e a giungere fino a noi praticamente integro. Capolavoro di maestria e tecnica dell'architettura romana, il Pantheon possiede la cupola più grande che sia stata costruita: ha infatti un diametro di ben 43 metri. Sebbene la cupola vera e propria inizi dal secondo cornicione, a prima vista si potrebbe credere che tutta la struttura della cella sottostante sia stata creata come tamburo per la magnifica copertura. Un'antica leggenda narra che durante la sua costruzione il tamburo venne interamente ricoperto di terra, che asportata successivamente avrebbe formato la collina di Montecitorio. Carico di tante glorie, il Pantheon troneggia serenamente davanti alla preziosa fontana con l'obelisco egizio, e dalle sue linee così armoniche si sprigiona un senso di incrollabile stabilità . Certo, l'edificio quale lo vediamo oggi, pur così bello, è come se fosse spogliato. I decori più scintillanti che lo arricchivano in origine sono infatti scomparsi: mancano fra l'altro le tegole in bronzo dorato che coprivano interamente la cupola, e il grande rilievo bronzeo che sicuramente decorava il timpano. Immaginarlo com'era innesca un allettante gioco per la fantasia visiva; ma anche "denudato", il Pantheon perde poco della sua straordinaria imponenza.
