Qualche hanno fa, passeggiando per Rodi (Grecia), dove ero in vacanza, mi ha colpito l'occhio disegnato su quest'albero perché sembrava farne davvero parte e perché gli dava un non so che di “vitalità”. Informandomi, ho scoperto che si trattava del cosiddetto “occhio greco”, un occhio azzurro portafortuna che viene di solito dipinto sulle perline di un braccialetto, oppure sui medaglioni di un ciondolo o di un portachiavi. Secondo la tradizione greca questo servirebbe a respingere il malocchio o ”matiasma” , poichè il blu è un colore in grado di respingere la sfortuna. In Grecia di questi occhi se ne possono trovare veramente molti in giro per i negozietti locali, ma esemplari più o meno identici e che richiamano alla stessa tradizione si trovano pure in Turchia. Infatti quest'occhio è presente anche nella tradizione musulmana (ed è comprensibile data la vicinanza della Grecia al mondo arabo) e prende il nome di ”occhio di Allah” ed avrebbe la stessa funzione di protezione dalle avversità. Il malocchio è un qualcosa presente in ogni fase della storia dell'uomo, dall'antica Mesopotamia fino ai giorni nostri e, per difendersi da esso, si sono creati vari tipi di amuleti.
