La disputa sulla "vera" tomba. Nel 1877 durante i lavori di restauro della cattedrale di Santo Domingo, venne scoperta una cassa di piombo contenente 13 frammenti d'osso grandi e 28 piccoli; su di essa c'era una scritta che attribuiva questi resti a "Cristobal Colón". Attualmente queste spoglie riposano al faro di Colombo, voluto dal governo dominicano (convinto che nel 1795 si siano riportate per sbaglio in Spagna le ossa del figlio Diego) a perenne memoria dello scopritore del continente americano. Nel giugno 2002 i professori spagnoli Marcial Castro e Sergio Algarrada hanno cercato di risolvere il problema del luogo di sepoltura di Colombo, reclamato per l'appunto dalla cattedrale di Santo Domingo e da quella di Siviglia. L'intento dei due studiosi era di estrarre, con l'aiuto dell'Università di Granada, del DNA dai resti umani di entrambe le cattedrali e quindi compararlo con il DNA del secondogenito Fernando (figlio naturale avuto dall'unione con Beatriz Enriquez de Arana), la cui identità è certa. Se le autorità andaluse (comunità autonoma dove si trova Siviglia) hanno formalmente chiesto autorizzazione alla cattedrale di Siviglia per riesumare i resti del presunto Colombo, altrettanto non hanno fatto le autorità della Repubblica Dominicana. L'Università di Granada, nel giugno 2003, ha comunque proceduto al prelievo del DNA dalle ossa di Siviglia e a un'osservazione delle stesse. Proprio in questa fase parve che le ossa non coincidessero con quelle di una persona dalle caratteristiche fisiche, o con l'età al momento della morte, di Cristoforo, ma il DNA isolato (in realtà un piccolo frammento di mtDNA) ha evidenziato una corrispondenza con quello del fratello Giacomo, prova che entrambi ebbero la stessa madre. Questa prova, unita ad analisi antropologiche e storiche, ha rafforzato nei ricercatori l'idea che la vera tomba di Cristoforo Colombo sia quella posizionata nella cattedrale di Siviglia. Visto che non è stato possibile esaminare i frammenti umani di Santo Domingo, non è noto se anch'essi appartengano a Cristoforo Colombo. (Fonte Wikipedia)
