#StorieDiPiume Airone cenerino - NOME SCIENTIFICO: Ardea cinerea Ordine: Ciconiformes - Famiglia: Ardeidae In Italia la specie è parzialmente sedentaria e nidificante. Fuori dai confini del nostro Paese, invece, l'Airone cenerino è distribuito tra Europa, Africa, Asia occidentale, orientale e Madagascar. È la specie di Airone che si spinge più a nord, tanto che in estate è possibile incontrarlo anche oltre il Circolo Polare Artico. In generale predilige le pianure, ma può vivere benissimo anche a 2000 metri sul livello del mare. Ama le zone umide d'acqua dolce, le cave d'argilla, le aree lagunari e le valli da pesca, nella maggior parte dei casi con ricca vegetazione ripariale, costituita da boschi di pioppo e salice. Si distingue dagli altri aironi per le sue grandi dimensioni: da adulto può raggiungere infatti i 90-98 centimetri e il suo peso può variare da 1 a poco più di 2 kg. Anche l'apertura alare è molto ampia (fino a 170 cm). Gli adulti presentano piume nere sul collo e un ciuffo scuro sulla nuca molto pronunciato; negli esemplari più giovani prevale un piumaggio più grigiastro. Zampe e becco sono gialli. Quando l'Airone cenerino spicca il volo il suo collo si ripiega, assumendo una tipica forma a “esse”. Non essendo migratore a lungo raggio, inizia la costruzione del nido già nel mese di febbraio, nido che in media accoglie 4-5 uova. Bisogna aspettare marzo per assistere alla deposizione delle uova e allo “svezzamento” dei pulcini. Una volta venuti alla luce, i pulcini dell'Airone cenerino sono nutriti dalla madre per 50 giorni, ma solo il 60% raggiungerà l'età adulta. L'alimentazione della specie include pesci, rane, girini, bisce d'acqua, invertebrati e piccoli mammiferi, che l'Airone cenerino trafigge facilmente grazie al robusto becco.
