Il mito di Babbo Natale nasce dalla leggenda di san Nicola, vissuto nel IV secolo, che si festeggia tradizionalmente il 6 dicembre: secondo la tradizione, san Nicola regalò una dote a tre fanciulle povere perché potessero andare spose invece di prostituirsi e - in un'altra occasione - salvò tre fanciulli. Nel Medioevo si diffuse in Europa l'uso di commemorare questo episodio con lo scambio di doni nel giorno del santo (6 dicembre). L'usanza è ancora in auge nei Paesi Bassi, in Germania, in Austria e in Italia (nei porti dell'Adriatico, a Trieste e nell'Alto Adige): la notte del 5 dicembre in groppa al suo cavallino fa concorrenza a Babbo Natale Nei Paesi protestanti san Nicola perse l'aspetto del vescovo cattolico ma mantenne il ruolo benefico col nome di Samiklaus, Sinterclaus o Santa Claus. I festeggiamenti si spostarono alla festa vicina più importante, Natale. L'omone con la barba bianca e il sacco pieno di regali, invece, nacque in America dalla penna di Clement C. Moore, che nel 1822 scrisse una poesia in cui lo descriveva come ormai tutti lo conosciamo.
