Peterhof è una città nel distretto Petrodvortsovy di San Pietroburgo sulla sponda del golfo di Finlandia, situata a circa 30 chilometri a ovest di San Pietroburgo. Questa piccola città è famosa perché qui si trovano i palazzi e i giardini di Peterhof, creati su ordine di Pietro il Grande. Sono conosciuti anche come la “Versailles russa” e sono stati dichiarati Patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'UNESCO. Il complesso è stato la residenza degli zar fino alla Rivoluzione del 1917. Nel 1918 si è trasformato in Museo, anche se durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale è stato occupato e distrutto dalle truppe tedesche. Nel dopoguerra è cominciato il suo restauro, che continua ancora oggi. Il centro del complesso di Peterhof è costituito dal cosiddetto Gran Palazzo (in stile barocco), anche se più spettacolari del palazzo stesso sono i giardini e le fontane che lo circondano, lungo i quali si possono visitare anche palazzi più piccoli e costruzioni che ospitano musei. Più interessanti dei palazzi o dei musei del complesso, sono i giardini e le fontane di Peterhof: • Parco superiore. Si trova all'entrata del parco ed è composto da cinque fontane. Si può visitare gratuitamente. • Parco inferiore. Molto più spettacolare e la cui entrata (il biglietto costa 700 rubli) dà accesso al recinto nel quale si trovano i diversi palazzi e le costruzioni, così come il complesso di fontane più grande al mondo. Si estende per più di 100 ettari. L'acqua che utilizzano le fontane proviene da sorgenti naturali. Lungo il parco inferiore c'è una moltitudine di fontane e cascate come la Gran Cascata e la fontana di Sansone. Ci sono anche molte fontane ludiche per i bambini.
