Si stima che 140 mila bambini indiani al di sotto dei 5 anni muoiano per diarrea ogni anno. Lo scorso anno il premier Narendra Modi ha annunciato una campagna nazionale chiamata 'Swachh Bharat' (India Pulita) con l'obiettivo di assicurare un gabinetto in ogni casa nei prossimi cinque anni. Negli ultimi 20 anni la situazione è migliorata per quanto riguarda le condizioni igieniche della popolazione, ma non velocemente come è invece stato per il Sud-Est asiatico.
