Il Sarcofago di Rapolla è un monumento marmoreo risalente alla seconda metà del II secolo d.C., conservato oggi nel Museo Nazionale del Melfese a Melfi. Fu rinvenuto nel 1856, in località Albero in Piano a Rapolla, lungo il tracciato dell'antica via Appia ed è considerato tra i migliori esempi di arte funeraria dei maestri dell'Asia Minore. La cassa marmorea riproduce un tempio che ha la porta al centro di uno dei lati minori; una serie di nicchie ad arco, piattabanda e a timpano, alternate, racchiudono statue di divinità e di eroi classici; la parte superiore presenta, a coronamento, un fregio con tritoni e mostri marini. Sul coperchio, scolpito a forma di letto, giace la statua di una giovane defunta raffigurante, secondo alcuni, Emilia Scaura. Emilia Scaura (100 a.C. circa - 82 a.C.) era la figlia del patrizio romano Marco Emilio Scauro e della sua seconda moglie Cecilia Metella Dalmatica. Al momento della nascita di Emilia, Scauro era sessantenne e, nel ruolo di princeps senatus, oratore del Senato, era uno dei più illustri politici di Roma. Dopo la morte del padre, Emilia fu cresciuta dal secondo marito di sua madre, Lucio Cornelio Silla. Silla usò la sua figliastra per alleanze politiche. Nell'82, Emilia si sposò e venne messa incinta da un uomo che criticava chiaramente la condotta del padre dittatore. Silla forzò la ragazza al divorzio. Subito dopo, Emilia sposò Gneo Pompeo Magno, mentre era ancora incinta dal primo matrimonio. Questo matrimonio aumentò la popolarità di Pompeo e la sua ascesa, dal momento che Emilia era una patrizia aristocratica, mentre egli proveniva da una nuova famiglia di senatori.
