La chiesa di San Giovanni Battista era considerata il gioiello architettonico di Matera durante il Medioevo per la raffinata composizione architettonica e la fine decorazione. Attualmente non possiamo percepire interamente questo insieme perché l'aspetto attuale che ci presenta è in realtà la facciata laterale, in quanto quella principale è stata inglobata nel 1610 nella costruzione dell'edificio adiacente che doveva svolgere la funzione di nosocomio. Anticamente conosciuta come Santa Maria La Nova fu destinata alle nove monache penitenti di Accon portate a Matera dal Vescovo Andrea prima del 1193 dalla Palestina, ma era chiamata anche Santa Maria ai Foggiali dal nome latino “Fovea” cioè buca, di cui era ricca la zona per conservare le derrate alimentari come cereali e legumi. E' stata la prima costruzione sacra a sorgere fuori le mura e fu completata nel 1233, ma durante la guerra d'Otranto (1480) fu abbandonata in quanto il luogo era ritenuto pericoloso per le monache, essendo isolato e fuori delle mura difensive della città. Fu riaperta al culto soltanto nel 1695 da Monsignor del Ryos con l'attuale nome, ma a seguito del lungo stato di abbandono, furono necessarie drastiche modifiche strutturali. Nonostante la sovrapposizione per motivi di consolidamento di una parete ad arcate addossata alla facciata, possiamo cogliere l'estrema eleganza della struttura in alcuni particolari: il portale, opera dei maestri scalpellini Michele Del Giudice e Marco Di Lauria al centro, finemente intagliato con volute vegetali e motivi di testine scolpite che richiama quello della cattedrale (porta dei leoni), e, in alto, al centro del timpano, il piccolo rosone circondato da colonnine pensili e pilastrini, decorato da singolari sculture zoomorfe. Sotto il rosone, statua in pietra policroma di San Giovanni Battista che reca in mano il Vangelo sul quale è poggiato un agnello (XVIII secolo). L'esterno dell'abside (lato a destra osservando il portale), è la parte che ha subito meno modifiche strutturali; nel vertice del timpano ( parte superiore ) un angelo scolpito veglia sulla chiesa, mentre più in basso, al centro, il grande arco a tutto sesto è affiancato da mensole sormontate da elefanti. Ancora più in basso, una finestra a edicola monofora illumina l'interno attraverso la vetrata colorata ed è affiancata da colonnine con caratteristiche figure zoomorfe; la lavorazione intorno all'apertura richiama quella del portale romanico.
