La chiesa, costruita tra il 1220 e il 1230, subì ampliamenti e rifacimenti a partire dal Cinquecento. L'interno ha una navata centrale; ad essa vennero aggiunte una navatella a sinistra e una nave minore a destra. La navatella ampliò la chiesa nei secoli XV e XVI, la nave minore fu realizzata a partire dal 1582. Successivamente entrambe vengono ripartite in cappelle, come le vediamo oggi. L'intera chiesa non si sottrae ai furori innovativi del barocco: grazie al mecenatismo di mons. Vincenzo Lanfranchi (1665-1675), nel Seicento vengono restaurati il soffitto ligneo a lacunari e alcuni altari. Dal 1751 al '56 si eseguono le decorazioni a stucco che incorniciano i riquadri, coprono i pilastri e gli intradossi delle arcate, le quali si susseguono fino all'arco trionfale a sesto acuto. Oltre l'arco, nell'abside, è collocata la cantoria lignea ornata con pannelli provenienti da un polittico attribuito a Lazzaro Bastiani, pittore vissuto tra il 1430 e il 1512.
