Il 14 marzo 1888, alla presenza dei reali, fu posta la prima pietra di Palazzo di Giustizia su progetto dell'architetto Calderini, il quale si ispirò all'architettura neobarocca. Un anno dopo, durante i lavori di fondazione, le sabbie limacciose del fiume restituirono alla luce due sarcofagi, databili intorno al 150-170 d.C., appartenenti a personaggi della stessa famiglia: quello di una giovane donna morta prematuramente all'età di 18 anni, Crepereia Tryphaena, e quello di Crepereio Euhodo. I lavori di costruzione del Palazzo di Giustizia andarono per le lunghe, anche per le grandi ed ininterrotte polemiche e critiche che accompagnarono l'edificio sin dai primi anni della sua edificazione, che portarono all'esonero del Calderini dalla direzione dei lavori: l'inaugurazione si ebbe soltanto ben 22 anni dopo, il 9 novembre 1910. Il palazzo appare interamente in travertino, ma in verità ne è soltanto rivestito perché la sua struttura è in cemento armato, una tecnica di costruzione che costituì uno dei primi esempi in Europa. La facciata principale, rivolta verso il Tevere, è imperniata su un grande arco trionfale che ne costituisce il portale di accesso, sormontato dal gruppo scultoreo della "Giustizia", raffigurata seduta ed al centro delle figure figure simboliche della "Legge" e della "Forza". La facciata, costituita da un corpo centrale e due laterali, presenta altre statue colossali, opera di scultori diversi, raffiguranti "Cicerone", "Papiniano", "De Luca" e" Vico" in piedi ai lati dell'ingresso, mentre seduti vi sono "Licinio Crasso" e "Salvo Giuliano". Ai lati dei tre finestroni sovrastanti l'arco centrale vi sono due figure alate raffiguranti la "Fama" che ha per attributo emblematico la tromba e la corona. La facciata posteriore si affaccia invece su piazza Cavour. Al di sopra del palazzo è situata la colossale quadriga bronzea (nella foto 2), opera di Ettore Ximenes, raffigurante la "Fama" che guida il carro e qui collocata soltanto nel 1926. Il palazzo avrebbe dovuto rappresentare il nuovo ordine che riparava alle ingiustizie del governo pontificio, ma i romani, poco convinti, lo soprannominarono "Palazzaccio" per il suo aspetto e per la sua funzione. Nel 1970 il Palazzaccio minacciò di crollare e fu temporaneamente abbandonato. Dopo un lungo restauro oggi è tornato ad ospitare la Corte Suprema di Cassazione, la sede per la quale era stato costruito. Fa rima con Palazzaccio il gestaccio della persona in primo piano a destra, vabbè!!!
