Russia, estate 1941. Lasciata l'Albania, il nuovo luogo ameno per trascorrere il tempo è la Russia: è l'estate del 1941. Giuseppe aveva due grandi passioni: la cucina e i motori. Cresciuto nella Scuola Alberghiera di Merano non poteva non amare la cucina ma anche la meccanica era un suo punto di forza. Il pesante veicolo ritratto alle sue spalle ha fatto una brutta fine e Giuseppe, suo affezionato custode e autista, l'avrebbe potuta fare insieme a lui … e io non sarei qui a raccontare. Un buio pomeriggio d'inverno tra il 1941 e il 1942, durante una corvee verso le linee italiane attestate sul Don, Giuseppe che aveva orecchie buone si era insospettito per il rumore strano che forse poteva provenire dal motore ma della cui provenienza aveva dei dubbi. Il sospetto che il rumore strano fosse di altra natura è stata la salvezza sua e del commilitone che lo accompagnava. Fermato il veicolo e scesi in tutta fretta si sono buttati nella neve più lontano possibile: un aereo da caccia russo aveva intercettato il camion, lo aveva seguito per qualche secondo e quindi incendiato e distrutto a raffiche di mitragliatrice.
