Antica abbazia abitata da monaci benedettini. La costruzione originaria risale all'epoca del Sacro Romano Impero e si ritiene che la prima cappella sia stata addirittura fondata dall'imperatore Carlo Magno da cui prese ilnome di cappella carolingia, ora adibita a sacrestia dell'attuale chiesa che invece risale al XII secolo. Dal 1118, grazie ad una importante donazione di una famiglia nobile locale l'abbazia diventa uno dei più ricchi e prestigiosi luoghi sacri della regione con possedimenti religiosi e castelli in tutti i dintorni. In seguito alla politica espansionistica di Siena, perde in seguito il castello della vicina Montalcino e inizia un lento ma insesorabile periodo di decadenza che porta alla perdita di quasi tutti i possedimenti e al declino del complesso monastico fino al 1870, anno in cui un importante lavoro di restauro riporta la chiesa all'aspetto odierno. Sullo sfondo si vede il bordo medioevale di Castelnuovo dell'Abate, un tempo possedimento dell'Abbazia. Come sempre sono graditi commenti e critiche costruttive.
