La Pietà è considerata il primo capolavoro del poco più che ventenne Michelangelo ed anche l'unica opera che porta la sua firma, sulla fascia a tracolla che regge il manto della Vergine: "MICHAEL • AGELUS • BONAROTUS • FLORENT• FACIEBA”. Nel 1964 fu l'unica volta che la Pietà lasciò il territorio vaticano per essere esposta all'Esposizione Universale di New York dove fu ammirata da più di 21 milioni di persone.
