Parco archeologico di Baratti e Populonia, Piombino, Livorno ... novembre 2013 ... L'antica Pupluna, ricca e prosperosa lucumonia etrusca, costituisce uno degli insediamenti umani più antichi dell'intera Toscana. La città si componeva di due parti ben distinte: l'acropoli, in alto sul colle a dominio del golfo di Baratti, ed una vera e propria area industriale sviluppatasi lungo la costa tra attrezzature portuali ed un numero ingente di forni per la lavorazione dei metalli. Populonia subì la comune sorte di decadenza delle altre città della federazione etrusca, soggiogate e soffocate dalla supremazia militare di Roma; Silla ne decise persino la distruzione durante il conflitto civile con Mario ... Nel primo secolo dopo Cristo silenzio e distruzione regnavano sul sito di antico splendore e secoli bui seguirono anche la fine dell'Impero; le scorribande saracene poi, non consigliavano certo insediamenti stabili lungo le rive del Tirreno! Populonia rinacque in età medioevale e nel XIV secolo il borgo venne dotato di un castello fortificato che ancora oggi, seppur rimaneggiato, domina il colle ove sorgeva l'acropoli; dagli spalti del possente torrione o dal camminamento di ronda della torre semicircolare, simile ad un'esedra e munita di vigorosi merli ghibellini, il panorama lascia senza parole ...
