Nessuna visita al Cairo sarebbe completa senza un giro a Khan Al-Khalili. Questo colorato, rumoroso, affollato ed eccitante mercato offre ogni genere di articoli e scintillante chincaglieria. Nel mercato delle spezie adiacente potrete acquistare erbe di ogni tipo. Il mercato dei profumi è traboccante di infinite miscele di essenze e oli essenziali. Inoltrandovi verso la parte centrale, troverete venditori d'oro, di tessuti, di tappeti e di tutto ciò che potreste desiderare. Se non trovate quello che state cercando, non esitate a chiedere agli stessi commercianti, perche' è molto probabile che loro sappiano dove potrete trovarlo. Anche se non siete in vena di acquisti vale sempre la pena di fare una passeggiata nei tortuosi vicoli di questo quartiere labirintico. Questo mercato risale al 14esimo secolo, quando l'emiro Dajaharks Al-Khalili fece costruire il complesso commerciale sul sito della tomba di Za'afran, il tradizionale luogo di sepoltura dei regnanti Fatimidi in Egitto. Questa struttura era parte di un processo di ricostruzione intrapreso dal Sultano Barquq (1382-1399) per aiutare la città nel recupero dalla devastazione causata dalla Morte Nera durante il 13esimo e 14esimo secolo. Khan el Khalili è situato a fianco di Midan Hussein, piazza di fronte all'omonima moschea, che ospita numerosi negozi e ristoranti. Se avete occasione di andare al Cairo, non mancate di fare un giro in questo variopinto mercato di varia umanità, e nemmeno di bere il caffé turco nel bar nella piazza centrale, dove gratuitamente e a richiesta vi leggono "i fondi caffé", esperienza incredibile.
