L'Arnica montana appartiene alla famiglia delle Asteraceae. Il nome del genere, parrebbe derivare da una corruzione di “ptàrmica”, derivato dal greco “ ptarmikos” che significa starnutire, con allusione alle proprietà starnutatorie delle foglie, che venivano usate come tabacco da naso e anche fumate dai contandini della regioni montane del nord Europa. Altri autori ritengono che derivi dalla parola greca “arnakis”= pelle di agnello, con riferimento alla delicate nervature delle foglie, simili appunto a quelle della pelle d'agnello. Il nome specifico indica l'habitat di crescita. Utilizzato fin dal terzo secolo del secondo millennio in fitoterapia, ha proprietà antiecchimotiche, antinfiammatorie, analgesiche, antisettiche, cicatrizzanti, astringenti e antinevralgiche. Utile per ematomi, distorsioni, dolori muscolari e articolari, edemi sottocutanei, reumatismi, foruncolosi, scottature e punture di insetto. Per uso esterno in unguenti e creme per slogature, contusioni, distorsioni, ulcere varicose, geloni e gargarismi per la gola. Compresse imbevute di Arnica possono dare buoni risultati nel trattamento delle emorroidi e negli edemi da frattura. Curiosità: Ignorata dagli antichi, forse perché cresce solo a quote abbastanza elevate, solo nel XII secolo appare citata nei testi medico-erboristici. Si sa che la utilizzavano S. Ildegarda (Ildegarda di Bingen (1098-1179) e gli studiosi della scuola medica salernitana. Oggi conosciamo, lo hanno dimostrato studi abbastanza recenti, suoi effetti terapeutici, ma conosciamo pure la sua tossicità. E' nota anche come "Tabacco della montagana", "Erba delle cadute " o "Tabac des Vosges", godette presso l'ambiente medico dell'appellativo di "China dei poveri", prima che se ne scoprisse la tossicità per uso interno, veniva impiegata in alternativa al chinino, per curare la malaria e le febbri intermittenti. In Germania è tuttora legalmente usata, in Gran Bretagna l'uso è limitato alle applicazioni esterne, mentre negli Stati Uniti è considerata pericolosa.
