Questo singolarissimo fiore assomiglia assai poco a una campanula, anche se è della famiglia della campanulaceae. Ed è difficile capire perchè la forma delle sue foglie ricordano proprio quelle della scorzonera, margherita gialla con foglioline basali spesso lanceolate. Il nome comune di raponzolo fa supporre che la radice sia commestibile, come quella del raponzolo, campanula a tutti gli effetti. Come sempre i nomi delle piante, comuni o scientifici che siano, derivano dall'antica scienza popolare, dall'osservazione attenta e risalgono a tempi in cui scorzonera e raponzolo erano molto più familiari di quanto non lo siano oggi. Però si tratta di una pianta strana, seppure assai frequente nei boschi, almeno in Liguria, i fiori di un bel colore azzurro violaceo sono disposti in una sorta di spiga o pannocchia, sono tubolari e sottili con la corolla divisa in cinque lacinie saldate alla base e all'apice, prima di sfiorire si aprono e le estremità si arrotolano, formando curiosi riccioli violetti.
