Dimensioni: apertura alare 45-50 mm. Descrizione: dorso delle ali di colore arancione-giallo con reticolato di linee e fasce nere molto variabili. Rovescio bianco crema con fascia submarginale, dell'ala posteriore, gialla con macchie arancioni. Molto simile a Melitaea cinxia, si distingue per l'assenza di macchie nere sulla parte superiore dell'ala posteriore. Distribuzione e habitat: diffusa in tutta l'Italia continentale e Sicilia in ambienti fioriti dal limite fino a 1500-2000 metri di quota. Le larve si sviluppano su Centaurea e Plantago. Periodo di attività: gli adulti si possono osservare da aprile a settembre.
