Eretta sulle rovine del Tempio di Giunone Moneta nel VI secolo, la chiesa sorge sulla cima più alta del Campidoglio. Il suo nome trae origine da una leggenda secondo la quale una sibilla avrebbe predetto ad Augusto la venuta del figlio di Dio dicendo "Haec est ara filii Dei" da qui il nome di Ara Coeli. Già esistente nel VII secolo, divenne intorno all'anno mille abbazia benedettina per passare successivamente ai frati minori, che tuttora la officiano. Questi ne iniziarono la ricostruzione secondo gli stili romanico e gotico. Nel medioevo assunse un ruolo assai rilevante poiché vi si radunavano i consiglieri per discutere della "Res Publica". La scalinata di 124 gradini di marmo venne costruita nel XIII secolo secondo la leggenda come ringraziamento per la fine della peste. La sua realizzazione si deve alla volontà del tribuno Cola di Rienzo che, trasformatosi in tiranno, da qui parlava alla folla. Dalla cima si gode un bel panorama di Roma con le cupole di Sant'Andrea della Valle e di San Pietro. La chiesa era ed è famosa per il " statua del Bambinello ", una scultura in legno del bambino Gesù intagliata nel XV secolo con il legno d'olivo proveniente dal Giardino dei Getsemani e ricoperta di preziosi ex-voto. I fedeli vi si recavano per chiedere la grazia da un male o da una disgrazia. La statua è stata rubata nel febbraio del 1994 e mai più ritrovata. Oggi al suo posto è presente una copia, alla quale non mancano nuovi ex voto. Il vasto interno è diviso in tre navate da una doppia fila di colonne di spoglio, tutte diverse l'una dall'altra, alcune più lunghe e incassate nel pavimento, altre più corte e allungate con basi e capitelli anch'essi diversi. Le 122 colonne che dividono l'interno della chiesa Provengono tutte dalla precedente chiesa benedettina e prima ancora da edifici romani. La terza colonna di sinistra ha un'iscrizione: “A cubiculo Augustorum”, essa proviene dalla stanza da letto dell'imperatore ed è attraversata da un foro obliquo, a ricordo della tradizione secondo la quale Augusto ebbe l'apparizione della Vergine col Bambino nella sua camera da letto. Sulla quarta colonna di sinistra un affresco di scuola viterbese raffigura la Madonna del Rifugio. Sulla V colonna sinistra resta l'affresco tardomedievale con San Luca Evangelista. Il soffitto, decorato con motivi navali, commemora la vittoria di Marcantonio Colonna nella battaglia di Lepanto del 1571 e fu realizzato sotto il papato di Gregorio XIII Boncompagni, il cui stemma di famiglia, il dragone, è visibile all'estremità dell'altare.
