Il cimitero monumentale fu istituito nel 1801 riutilizzando le preesistenti strutture della certosa di San Girolamo di Casara, fondata a metà del trecento, soppressa nel 1797 su ordine di Napoleone e di cui è sopravvissuta la Chiesa di San Girolamo. La forte passione della nobiltà e della borghesi per la costru-zione dei sepolcri familiari trasformò la Certosa in un vero e proprio "museo all'aria aperta," tappa del gran tour italiano: la visitarono Chateaubriand, Byron, Dickens, Mommsen, Stendhal. In particolare il Chiostro Terzo (o della Cappella) è un ciclo notevole di ispirazione neoclassica e simbologia illuminista; uniche forse al mondo le tombe dipinte a tempera, quelle realizzate a stucco e scagliola. Il cimitero ha subito un forte aumento dagli anni cinquanta in poi. Nel 2007 la sala Pantheon, dagli anni novanta del novecento già destinata ai riti laici diventa una sala dei Commiato per chiunque intenda usufruire di un periodo di raccoglimento prima del rito; il nuovo allestimenti è opera dell'artista Flavio Favelli: La chiesa non parrocchiale è gestita daila comunità dei Passionisti di Casalecchio di Reno. In essa si trovano opera di Bartolomeo Cesi (1556-1629) e il coro ligneo intarsiato ripristinato da Biagio de Marchi nel 1538 dopo l'incendio provocato dai lanzichenecchi di Carlo V. In evidenza sono i dipinti dedicati alla vita di Cristo, dalle misure di circa 450x350 cm. furono commissionati da Giovan Andrea Sirani e la figlia Elisabetta, a Francesco Gessi, Giovanni Maria Galli da Bibbiena, Lorenzo Pasinelli, Domenico Maria Canuti e al napoletano Nunzio Rossi. Altre opere Antonio e Bartolomeo Vivarini, Ludovico e Agostino Carracci oltre al Guercino, furono trasferite in epoca napoleonica alla Pinacoteca nazionale di Bologna.....Tutte le foto contenute in questa galleria sono copyright di Mauro Monesi e non possono essere utilizzate in alcuna forma senza il consenso dell'autore....
