Gli antenati di Aldo Conterno nell'ottocento emigrarono in Argentina e dopo alcuni anni, a causa di vicissitudini famigliari, rientrarono in Italia. Fu allora che Giovanni Conterno ritornò con la famiglia a Monforte d'Alba nella piccola azienda vinicola del padre Giuseppe, coadiuvandolo nella produzione di vino locale. Con il suo rientro la cantina Conterno aumentò la produzione di vino che era venduto in fusti non solo in Italia ma anche nelle lontane Americhe grazie ad un parente che risiedeva ancora in Argentina. I Conterno sentirono così l'esigenza di creare, grazie alla richiesta del mercato, un grande Barolo da produrre solo nelle migliori annate, con lunghe fermentazioni in grado di reggere negli anni. Nel 1920 si iniziò quindi ad imbottigliare il Barolo riserva. Alla fine degli anni '30 Giovanni cedette le redini dell'azienda al figlio Giacomo che, continuando la tradizione del padre con grande serietà e lungimiranza, visitava personalmente la clientela e, grazie al prestigio che il Barolo andava assumendo, affermava il proprio marchio in molte zone d'Italia. E' in questi anni che i figli Giovanni e Aldo iniziarono ad affiancarlo e a seguirlo nella conduzione dell'attività. Nella metà degli anni cinquanta Aldo decise di partire per l'America con il sogno di crearsi un'azienda vitivinicola con l'aiuto dello zio che già viveva in California. Il periodo trascorso negli Stati Uniti fu per lui un'esperienza costruttiva ed indimenticabile che però, in seguito al verificarsi di alcune situazioni, dovette abbandonare decidendo così di tornare in Italia presso l'azienda paterna. Quando nel 1961 Giacomo passa l'azienda ai figli, la cantina è ormai una prestigiosa realtà riconosciuta in gran parte del territorio nazionale. Nel cuore di Aldo però, i cinque anni passati in terra statunitense, lasciarono vivo il desiderio di realizzare un'azienda propria. Fu così che, dopo un lungo periodo di lavoro a fianco del fratello, Aldo decise di portare avanti quel sogno interrotto in America acquistando la cascina "Favot" e fondando la "Poderi Aldo Conterno" nel 1969. Oggi l'azienda è condotta dai tre figli di Aldo : Franco, Stefano e Giacomo che seguendo le orme del padre portano avanti la tradizione di famiglia.
