All'esterno l'abbazia si presenta con la sua spettacolare e severa grandiosità. Dalla presenza di colonnine addossate, si deduce chela facciata doveva avere un portico Il ricco portale presenta un arco a sesto acuto, interrotto da un architrave decorato da un grandioso mosaico, opera di marmorai romani. Questo mosaico copre una iscrizione che attesta il contributo di Federico Barbarossa alla costruzione dell'abbazia. Nella facciata un mirabile rosone formato da 24 colonnine coronate da archetti acuti. La possanza della facciata è accentuata dall'esposizione dei potenti contrafforti.
