Nepal, Katmandu 1977, da negativo (Ilford FP4 per Matteo, cultore di antiche pellicole). Due viandanti, probabilmente marito e moglie, cercano la strada. Ambedue indicano, con il braccio e la mano, la possibile direzione. Alle loro spalle una ragazzina, o meglio, la metà del volto imbronciato della ragazzina, ahimè tagliato nel tentativo maldestro di fermare quell'attimo. Quel volto racconta di una situazione universale, la noia degli adolescenti, infastiditi dal dover accondiscendere alla volontà dei genitori: non più piccoli per seguire divertiti, non abbastanza grandi per andarsene per conto loro. Una famigliola in viaggio? La madre, impreziosita da ricchi monili, tiene in mano un ghiacciolo, la ragazza segue portando con sé un ombrello, il padre con la mano sinistra regge un bastone: tutti e tre sulle spalle hanno una sacca. Dove vanno? Chi sono? A differenza dei personaggi ritratti nelle altre foto, contestualizzati e quindi più facilmente interpretabili, questa immagine porta con sé un mistero, e con questo il fascino di un limite, di un'impossibilità: credo mi debba arrendere e, per citare il solito Barthes, riconoscere che l'unica e sola certezza di questa immagine – il suo noema – è che “ciò è stato”.
