È la chiesa di Firenze preferita da Peter, ed anche la mia! Chiesa di San Miniato al Monte Sorta dopo il mille sul preesistente Oratorio edificato da San Miniato, primo evangelizzatore e martire cristiano fiorentino. Vittima delle persecuzioni dell'imperatore Decio (249-251 d.C.), Miniato era forse un principe armeno: la leggenda vuole che dopo essere stato decapitato raccogliesse la sua testa e, rimessala sul collo, andasse a morire nella grotta sul monte alle Croci dove viveva da eremita e dove poi sarebbero sorti l'oratorio e la chiesa che porta il suo nome. La costruzione del tempio, che resta il più bell'esempio di puro romanico fiorentino, ebbe inizio nel 1018 per volere del vescovo Ildebrando e proseguì fino al 1207. La facciata fu realizzata in marmo bianco di Carrara e verde di Prato (sec. XII-XIII) e divisa in due ordini raccordati fra loro da tarsie di forma romboidale che alludono all'opus reticolatum, la tessitura muraria romana tipica dell'età imperiale, la stessa ripresa da Leon Battista Alberti nel basamento di Palazzo Rucellai. L'ordine superiore è sormontato da un mosaico su fondo oro del XIII secolo raffigurante Cristo in trono benedicente tra Maria e Miniato. In alto, sopra il frontone, una grande aquila in rame dorato ci ricorda l'Arte di Calimala, amministratrice fin dal 1288 dei beni del convento benedettino. La spettacolare facciata di San Miniato ispirò nel Quattrocento l'Alberti per il completamento di quella di Santa Maria Novella e nell'Ottocento il rivestimento delle facciate del Duomo e di Santa Croce. I vivaci giochi di luce del sole sull'esterno del monumento, ed anche all'interno dell'abside, valgono già da soli la gita fuoriporta. A destra, guardando la chiesa, c'è il Palazzo dei Vescovi (visitabile suonando alla porta interna alla chiesa), ora abitato dai monaci olivetani che si fanno carico anche della gestione della basilica. A sinistra rimangono i resti degli antichi bastioni, con la torre campanaria di Baccio d'Agnolo (1518) che pare quasi un frammento di fortificazione romana. Questo campanile, costruito in luogo dell'originale crollato nel 1499 e rimasto incompiuto, fu sfruttato militarmente durante l'assedio del 1529 su suggerimento di Michelangelo. Rivestito di materassi e balle di lana, fu utilizzato come base per due cannoni che dovevano sparare sulle truppe di Carlo V. Ancora oggi si vedono i segni di un tale impiego L'interno (dove le aggiunte si susseguirono fino all'età barocca) è a tre navate, con un prezioso pavimento centrale a intarsio marmoreo (XI sec.) decorato da Simboli dello Zodiaco. Il Presbiterio sopraelevato è formato da un raro complesso scultoreo romanico-toscano di ispirazione classica: altare, recinto a transenne marmoree (1207) e pulpito quadrangolare (opera di Giovanni di Gaiole e Francesco di Domenico) con leggio sorretto dall'aquila di San Giovanni Evangelista. Nel Coro un mosaico con Cristo in trono benedicente (1297, restaurato da Alessio Baldovinetti nel 1491). Sotto il Presbiterio una cripta (sec. XI) con 36 agili colonne di provenienza varia e la volta affrescata con Santi e Profeti da Taddeo Gaddi. Qui furono deposte nel 1013 le spoglie di San Miniato. Davanti, al centro della navata maggiore, la bellissima e raffinata Cappella del Crocifisso, un'edicola marmorea rinascimentale eseguita da Michelozzo (1448) per volontà di Piero dé Medici come custodia del venerato Crocifisso detto di San Giovanni Gualberto, ora in Santa Trinita: sulla volta a botte terracotte di Luca della Robbia, sull'altare una tavola di Agnolo Gaddi. La navata destra contiene, fra affreschi dei secoli XIV e XV, i resti di San Miniato, un altare con tavola cuspidata, capolavoro di Jacopo del Casentino, e l'ingresso alla Sagrestia, affrescata da Spinello Aretino con le Storie di San Benedetto (1387 ca. molto restaurata nel 1840), forse l'opera più importante di questo autore. Nella navata sinistra la rinascimentale Cappella del Cardinale del Portogallo (1461-66), edificata da Antonio Manetti, allievo del Brunelleschi, per Jacopo di Lusitania, cardinale arcivescovo di Lisbona morto a Firenze nel 1459. Ha nella volta cinque medaglioni di Luca della Robbia e contiene un'Annunciazione a fresco di Alessio Baldovinetti (1466-67), una tavola (il cui originale è agli uffizi) di Antonio e Piero del Pollaiolo ed affreschi di Angeli volanti degli stessi. Il monumento funebre fu scolpito in marmo da Antonio Rossellino. Nel chiostro, infine, un contributo del grande Paolo Uccello: i resti degli affreschi delle Scene della vita dei Santi Padri (1440 ca.), dipinti nella loggia superiore. Fuori dalla Basilica vale la pena di visitare il Cimitero Monumentale (detto "delle Porte Sante") realizzato nel secolo scorso sull'area conventuale, all'interno del recinto fortificato ideato da Michelangelo nel 1529. Progettato dall'architetto Nicolò Matas negli anni in cui realizzava la facciata di Santa Croce, esso ospita i resti di molte celebrità come Papini, Montale, Stibbert, Villari, Lorenzini (detto "il Collodi", il creatore di Pinocchio). Le numerose cappelle di famiglia della borghesia fiorentina rappresentano un vero repertorio dell'architettura cittadina coeva: liberty, art déco, razionalismo, architettura organica.
