La banda mi emoziona sempre, perché da bambina, in occasione della festa della Madonna della Madia, protettrice della mia città, con le mie sorelle, mio fratello e altri piccoli amici, ne aspettavamo il passaggio, per raccogliere caramelle e cioccolatini che, piovevano abbondantente da terrazze e balconi. Gli adulti, invece in ossequio a una vecchia tradizione, la mattina del 14 dicembre e del 14 agosto (giorni in cui si festeggia quest'antico evento), sono soliti correggere il caffé con il liquore d'anice. Tutti i monopoli che risiedono fuori città, in occasione di questa festa, in inverno o in estate, tornano per salutare la nostra Augusta Protettrice. Inutile dire che, anch'io sono ligia a questa tradizione, e anche adesso che ho tanti anni, mi emoziona la banda che attraversa la città. E, adesso qualche cenno storico: La tradizione vuole che l'icona della Madonna della Madia sia stata posta in salvo su una zattera in Turchia durante le lotte iconoclaste. L'imbarcazione di fortuna con il prezioso carico sarebbe quindi approdata per la prima volta in città, la notte del 16 dicembre 1117. Un'antica leggenda narra che la Madonna andò in sogno a un pio sacrestano di nome Mercurio che per tre volte si recò dal vescovo Romualdo per riferirgli che la Madonna era in porta con i legni di cui necessitava l'erigenda cattedrale romanica. Quelle travi che hanno così tanto navigato per mare, dopo la ricostruzione della cattedrale in forme barocche (nel '700), sono ancora in alto, oltre il tetto in pietra, a sostegno delle capriate e nella prima cappella a destra. Per tre volte il sacrestano fu ricacciato dal vescovo che lo tacciò d'ubriachezza fino a quando gli angeli fecero suonare miracolosamente le campane della città e la gente (anche il vescovo) si riversò al porto e vide zattera e icona. La scena si ripete per due volte l'anno identica (il 14 di agosto e il 16 dicembre). L'icona è un'odigitria (in greco, colei che guida), modello tipicamente bizantino che si rifà alla prima immagine di Maria, dipinta da san Luca. In loco è detta "della Madia", in riferimento alla zattera (Almadìa in spagnolo). E' una tempera su tavola, una sorta di "preghiera figurata" in cui anche i colori rispettano le rigide regole del rivolgersi a Dio. Un particolare espediente pittorico, poi, permette alla Vergine di osservare il visitatore posto in qualsiasi posizione prospettica. Il suo doppio manto, indica la sua natura divina e terrena, lei madre di Dio e madre dell'umanità.
