La Cisterna Basilica (Yerebatan Sarniçi) è una delle grandi opere realizzate da Giustiniano nel 532. L'imponente edificio ha numeri davvero impressionanti: 336 colonne con capitelli e pietre scolpite divise in 12 file da 28 ciascuna, 140 metri di lunghezza, 70 di larghezza, capace di contenere 80.000 metri cubi d'acqua. Era utilizzato come deposito delle acque di Istanbul durante l'epoca bizantina e in seguito garantiva l'approvvigionamento idrico per il palazzo Topkapi. Scendendo dal livello della strada vi troverete di fronte una vera meraviglia: un capolavoro dell'architettura romana illuminato da suggestive luci rosse. Le colonne hanno stili e forme diverse perché provengono da vari templi: oltre quelle corinzie, ce ne sono anche alcune scolpite con noduli, occhi e lacrime e a forma di tronco d'albero. Le più affascinanti sono quelle poggiate su due enigmatiche teste di Medusa, una di profilo e una capovolta.
