Il monte Sant'Angelo con i resti del tempio di Giove Anxur e l'isolato Pisco Montano visti dal porto di Terracina. . Il Monte S. Angelo, che domina dall'alto dei suoi 227 metri la città di Terracina, è la parte più avanzata dei Monti Ausoni, i quali proprio qui toccano per la prima ed unica volta il mare; l'altura ha quindi costituito, sin dai primi tempi storici, un formidabile sbarramento naturale alle comunicazioni umane sulla costa laziale. Alla fine del IV sec. a.C. il tracciato della Via Appia superò a Nord il Monte S. Angelo e, probabilmente nello stesso periodo, la sommità dell'altura venne destinata a scopi religiosi, come testimoniano le più antiche strutture conservate ed alcuni reperti ritrovati.Un'ipotesi è quella che identifica in Terracina la città di Lamo, un florido centro abitato dai Lestrigoni, nel cui porto sarebbe approdato Ulisse e allora sul Pisco Montano avrebbero dovuto esserci le attrezzature della sua nave in attesa della ripartenza.
