Ai Mercatini di Natale di Colonia, si respirava un'atmosfera magica. Sembrava di essere atterrati su un pianeta diverso, in un'altra epoca, dove tutto era fantastico e giocoso. Lo sguardo spaziava instancabile, posandosi ogni momento su un'attrazione diversa, ed ecco, perfino una pista da sci per gnomi.Mi sono avvicinata, era bellissimo, vederli roteare sulla neve ghiacciata, nei miei libri di fiaba li avevo sempre visti nei boschi, ma sulla neve mai. Ma vediamo un po' più da vicino, chi sono questi strani e buffi ometti che hanno colorato la nostra infanzia. La parola gnomo venne introdotta da Paracelso (il più autorevole rappresentante del naturalismo tedesco del Rinascimento Medico), dopo il 1493, nella magia rinascimentale e nell'alchimia per indicare uno spirito ctonio,( il termine indica tutte quelle divinità femminili legate al culto degli dei sotterranei e personificazioni di forze sismiche). Paracelso, fu il primo a menzionare gli gnomi, facendone derivare il nome dalla radice greca gnosis ("conoscenza"). Il medico naturalista considerava gli gnomi spiriti della terra e del sottosuolo, e sosteneva che potessero spostarsi all'interno del terreno con la stessa facilità con cui gli uomini vi camminano sopra. Inoltre, sempre secondo Paracelso, i raggi del sole hanno il potere di trasformare gli gnomi in pietre. Tutti questi elementi sono anche tipici dei nani (si fa risalire la loro comparsi a circa 100 anni dopo gli gnomi), della mitologia nordica. Le due figure sono spesso sovrapposte e difficilmente distinguibili anche nel folklore e nella letteratura fiabesca, per indicare spiritelli legati alla terra. Talune fonti confondono anche gli gnomi con altre creature fantastiche (soprattutto dei boschi), per esempio elfi e goblin ). Nel folklore europeo, gli gnomi (detti anche folletti o piccolo popolo), sono creature fatate simili a uomini minuscoli. Sono tradizionalmente rappresentati con barba e baffi, e a volte dotati di caratteristici cappelli a cono, spesso di colore rosso. Abitano nei boschi, e sono (come fate, nani ed elfi) strettamente legati alla natura in cui abitano. Gli gnomi appaiono frequentemente nelle favole della tradizione folcloristica tedesca (e, per esempio, nei racconti dei fratelli Grimm); sono generalmente rappresentati come vecchietti minuscoli e burberi, che vivono sottoterra.
