La riserva occupa un'area di 285 ettari, compresi interamente nel comune di Vasto. Si estende lungo la costa adriatica a Nord del porto di Vasto, fino ad arrivare alla foce del fiume Sinello, dove è possibile incontrare l'unico bosco di latifoglie della riserva. Nella riserva, la zona pianeggiante appare maggiormente antropizzata; il paesaggio agricolo è di tipo tradizionale, con ampi vigneti, oliveti e appezzamenti coltivati prevalentemente a graminacee. L'area di maggiore interesse naturalistico è costituita dalla spiaggia di Punta Penna. Il promontorio di Punta Aderci (26 m s.l.m.) caratterizza l'intera area offrendo una visuale a 360° su tutta la riserva.
