Huge thanks to you all for your most lovely and encouraging comments! As I am sure you are aware, I am no expert at photographing birds, particularly in flight, but I enjoy the challenge.
@Micio and Claudio: I realise that it would have been optimal to have the sanderlings flying towards me but it was an impossibility on this occasion. It was only an hour or so before dusk and the tide was coming in. These little birds are the only ones of this species in the harbour (I checked on a bird sightings website) and they were huddled together, facing away from the shore on a tiny patch of shingle (that was already surrounded by water), which was becoming smaller and smaller by the minute. They took off because the tide eventually swept over their tiny island (not because of me!). The only way for there to have been a possibility of them flying towards me would have been if I had waded out beyond them into the water  ...... not to be done in very low temperatures at the beginning of January! :smile: This was a quiet part of the harbour, so more likely to be frequented by bird life - I may well return in search of another opportunity!
