Le prime notizie storiche sui primi abitanti dell'attuale Senegal risalgono al medioevo. Nei secoli a cavallo fra l'VIII e il IX secolo alcune popolazioni nere: Uolof, Serère, Tokolor, furono spinte a sud del fiume Senegal dall'avanzata dei Berberi e qui, si unirono ai Fulbe o Peul e ai Camiti giunti nella zona probabilmente dal Sahara occidentale e diedero vita al regno di Futa. Nell'XI secolo, a seguito degli Almoravidi e dell'Islam, il regno di Futa abbracciò la religione musulmana; dal XV secolo divenne invece tributario dell'impero Songhai, che aveva il suo centro nella zona dell'attuale Mali. I portoghesi nella seconda metà del XV secolo, furono i primi europei a raggiungere, il Senegal. Seguirono quindi gli olandesi, i francesi e gli inglesi, attratti soprattutto dalla possibilità di reperire schiavi. Dal XVII secolo i francesi, contrastati dagli inglesi, si imposero progressivamente nella regione. Essi costituirono la Compagnia del Senegal e di Gambia (dal 1634 Compagnia del Capo Verde), finalizzata alla tratta degli schiavi, e fondarono Saint-Louis e altri insediamenti costieri. Dopo che l'Inghilterra se ne era temporaneamente impossessata all'indomani della guerra dei Sette anni e nel corso delle guerre napoleoniche, con il congresso di Vienna nel 1816 la Francia riprese possesso della zona intorno al fiume Senegal. Contemporaneamente fu abolita la tratta degli schiavi. Il generale Louis Faidherbe, governatore dal 1854 al 1865, e in seguito Joseph-Simon Gallieni e Borgnis-Desbordes diedero quindi impulso all'espansionismo verso l'interno sconfiggendo nel 1857 i Tokolor del regno di Futa. Alla fine del XIX secolo la regione risultava saldamente in mano ai francesi, che si sforzarono di avviarne lo sviluppo. Furono costruite infrastrutture, si favorì la diffusione di colture specializzate come l'arachide, divenuta in seguito una delle principali risorse agricole del paese. Fondarono la città di Dakar che, nel 1857fdivenne la capitale dell'Africa occidentale francese e agli abitanti delle principali città senegalesi fu accordata la cittadinanza francese. Di cultura francese fu la stessa classe dirigente africana che si formò fra le due guerre e guidò il paese verso l'indipendenza, al cui interno si distinse in particolare Leopold Sedar Senghor. Il Senegal divenne repubblica autonoma nell'ambito della Comunità francese a seguito del referendum del 28 settembre 1958, e dall'aprile 1959 all'agosto 1960 si unì al Sudan francese (attuale Mali) nella Federazione del Mali.
