I tre larici millenari si trovano a 1430 metri di quota presso l'abitato di Santa Gertrude/Ultimo in un bosco che protegge dalle valanghe i masi “AuBerlahn”. Nel dialetto locale “Lahn” significa valanga. Essi sono gli ultimi testimoni dei primi insediamenti umani, quando la più interna val d'Ultimo era ancora popolata da orsi, lupi e linci. Su di un larice abbattuto dal vento nel 1930 sono stati contati più di 2000 anelli di accrescimento. I tre sopravvissuti segnati da tempeste ed intemperie vengono considerati le più antiche conifere d'Europa. Tutta la cima del larice più alto che misura 36,5 metri per una circonferenza di 7,0 metri è disseccata, colpita da un fulmine. Anche l'albero più grosso, con 8.34 mt. di circonferenza e alto 34,0 mt. dalla appariscente escrescenza bulbosa, ha perso la cima. Il larice dalla singolare cavità è invece già da generazioni spezzato a 6,0 mt. d'altezza; un ramo laterale ha di conseguenza assunto il ruolo di cima. Nonostante ormai solo in una ridottissima parte del tronco pulsi la vita, questo continua ogni anno a germogliare ed ha già raggiunto nuovamente i 22,5 mt. I larici millenari, che videro venire ed andare ca. 70 generazioni e l'impero romano prima e germanico poi, sono evidenti simboli della tenace volontà di sopravvivenza della natura.
