La Silene vulgaris (Moench) è una pianta conosciuta fin dall'antichità per le sue proprietà mangerecce. Si può comprendere quindi l'abbondanza di nomi popolari: oltre a quelli citati “sonaglini” e “cavoli della comare”. Il nome del genere (Silene) si riferisce alla forma del palloncino del fiore. Si racconta che Bacco avesse un compagno di nome Sileno con una gran pancia rotonda. Ma probabilmente questo nome è anche connesso con la parola greca “sialon” (= saliva); un riferimento alla sostanza bianca attaccaticcia secreta dal fusto di molte specie del genere. I calici rigonfi sono persistenti e mantengono la forma a palloncino che anzi nel tempo si irrigidisce per cui alla fine dell'estate si possono far scoppiare battendoli con la mano da qui un altro nome popolare: “schioppettini” e chi di noi non li ha mai fatti scoppiare sul dorso della mano ? Scatto effettuato nel Luglio 2016 a Santa Caterina Valfurva.
