Melanargia galathea Linnaeus 1758 Nome Volgare: Galatea Famiglia: Nymphalidae Sottofamiglia: Satyrinae Tribù: Melanargiini Lunghezza ala anteriore mm. 21-30 Descrizione: farfalla di media grandezza (la femmina può toccare i 30 mm di apertura alare), che si distingue facilmente dagli altri satiridi nostrani per la livrea nera e bianca. Superiormente, evidenzia un disegno a scacchiera che si ripete sulle parti inferiori con tonalità giallastre. I disegni appaiono meno appariscenti sulle ali posteriori, sulle quali si osserva, inoltre, una serie interrotta di ocelli submarginali. Cellula discale sulle psaa biancastra nei 2/3 basali, nera nel resto e non attraversata da una linea nera. Si può confondere con M. russiae, che però ha la cellula biancastra attraversata da una fascia nera. Maschio: colore bianco con ampie macchie nere che formano un grossolano reticolo Femmina: simile al maschio ma generalmente più grande, le femmine presentano talvolta un rovescio caratteristico (forma leucomelas) con apice delle anteriori e ali posteriori di colore bianco giaognolo, prvo di disegni neri. Rovescio: colore bianco giallastro. Ali anteriori simili al dritto ma con disegni neri ridotti. Posteriori simili al dritto ma con disegni grigiastri contornati di nero e una serie di macchiette submarginali scure cerchiate da una linea dello stesso colore. Bruco: peloso, sono di colore variabile dal verde-giallo al bruno, con due linee longitudinali scure dorsali e un paio di linee giallastre lateralmente. Testa e appendici caudali sono rosso-bruni. Conducono vita diurna nutrendosi di Graminacee (gen. Phleum, Festuca, Bromus, Dactylis ecc.) alla base delle quali si impupano. Se disturbato, si arrotola su se stesso lasciandosi cadere al suolo. Distribuzione: tutta Italia esclusa la Sardegna e l'Isola d'Elba. Habitat: prati e radure dal piano basale a quello montano e cacuminale, sino a oltre 2000 metri s.l.m. Generazioni annuali: una con sfarfallamento a giugno-luglio Piante nutrici: Phleum pratense, Poa trivialis, Brachipodium sylvaticum, Brachipodium pinnatum, Bromus erectus, Dactylis glomerata.
