Il centro storico di Ferentino è racchiuso entro mura che risalgono al VI secolo a.C. Che per la grandezza sono chiamate ciclopiche, al contrario dei paesi circostanti che presentano mura poligonali, esse presentano rifacimenti in opera quadrata del I secolo a.C. Nel medioevo le mura vennero rinforzate con torri realizzate con pietre irregolari. Ben dodici sono le porte che si aprono in queste mura. la Porta Montana di epoca preromana, abbellita nei primi secoli dell'impero con il sistema a bugnato, attualmente ancora presente. Montana secondo alcuni perché esposta ai venti di tramontana, secondo altri perché protesa verso i monti. Essa non aveva solo scopo difensivo ma soprattutto carrabile, perché era la porta principale della città alla quale si accedeva dalla Via Latina Superiore e la sua importanza è messa in risalto soprattutto dal fatto che conducesse, con breve tratto, direttamente all'Acropoli.
