Voluta dall'imperatore Giustiniano come emblema della ricchezza culturale e artistica della sua corte e di Ravenna, la Basilica di San Vitale è una testimonianza esemplare dell'identità bizantina nell'Italia del VI secolo. La sua pianta ottagonale richiama i coevi santuari eretti in onore dei martiri cristiani, staccandosi dal tipico modello delle basiliche longitudinali. L'architettura della basilica, grazie alla particolarità della pianta e alla suddivisione dello spazio interno in esedre che si aprono sullo spazio centrale, risulta slanciata e leggera, ravvivata e illuminata da marmi policromi e dai capitelli realizzati a Bisanzio, lontanissimi dalla tradizione classica greco-romana. La decorazione a mosaico è concentrata nel presbiterio, con scene bibliche e gli Evangelisti, e nell'abside, dove si trovano i due grandi pannelli raffrontati che raffigurano, con attenzione quasi ritrattistica nei volti, l'imperatore Giustiniano e l'imperatrice Teodora insieme alle rispettive corti, sovrastati dal Cristo in gloria attorniato da angeli.
