L'area di Piazza Navona a Roma ricalca le dimensioni e la forma dell'antico Stadio di Domiziano di epoca romana; un'arena lunga oltre 270 metri e larga circa 55, costruita intorno all'86 d.C. ed in grado di ospitare fino a 33000 persone. Dopo essere stata restaurata da Alessandro Severo, ed aver trovato l'attuale sistemazione per intervento di Papa Innocenzo X, nella piazza furono organizzati fino al XIX secolo, vari generi di spettacoli, celebrazioni, e durante il mese di agosto, quando la piazza veniva allagata chiudendo gli scarichi delle fontane, perfino naumachie. Il nome "Piazza Navona" trova probabilmente origine dalle competizioni che si svolgevano nell'area; dal termine latino "in agone" infatti, si sarebbe nel tempo passati al volgare "nagone" e definitivamente a "navona". Piazza Navona è longitudinalmete segnata dalla presenza di tre fontane; le laterali "Fontana del Nettuno o dei Calderoni" e "Fontana del Moro" si devono ai disegni di Giacomo della Porta, mentre la centrale "Fontana dei Fiumi" fu realizzata dal Bernini fra il 1648 ed il 1651 d.C. Di fronte a quest'ultima sorge, sulle rovine dello stadio di Domiziano e di un antica basilica ancora visitabili dai sotterranei dell'edificio, la chiesa a croce greca di Sant'Agnese in Agone, che, progettata inizialmente da G.Rinaldi, fu completata nel 1652 dal Borromini con la caratteristica facciata concava, i campanili gemelli e la cupola.
