Very beautiful, Tim! Who would have thought I would say that about a row of cranes??? But it really is a lovely sight - like a row of illuminated mechanical giraffes! :) The starburst are very pronounced for f/8 - is that because it's a 5 second exposure? |

Electrical mechanical giraffes indeed, Ann - I've always found an awe at the sight of these especially at night - a hive of activity too. I don't think that the starbursts are that pronounced, they might seem larger because one looks harder into the quite small area they occupy. The effect is a physical one and has nothing to do with length of exposure, though a brighter image might may make them seem clearer. Modern lenses have a more curved set of aperture blades (rounded aperture blades) to give a more circular bokeh when stopped down, instead of a more hexagonal shape) whereas this very old mechanical manual focus lens didn't have such novelties, so the aperture blades were straighter, which, in the corners of the opening, would create sharper angles, and thus, more emphasised starbursts. I wasn't aiming for starbursts at all with this shot, I just wanted the lens at its best possible resolution, partly to see what the D7100 could do. I think too empahasised starbursts would have prettified it somewhat anyway, so just as well. So, it is quite a complex issue and quite difficult to explain - I hope I made a reasonable job of doing so! |

Thanks for the explanation, Tim - that makes sense to me. I didn't really think it could have anything to do with the exposure but was bemused by them. I wonder how they would look at f/22? |

New expensive camera propped up on a wallet and lens cloth on a metal pole? Nervous enough at 5 seconds, let alone 30, Ann!! |
